You, my brothers, were called to be free.

But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature;

rather, serve one another in love.

Galatians 5:13

Serving others, as the blog post from yesterday highlighted, is part of being a good steward of God’s grace and the gifts He has given to each of us.  May this verse above from Galatians further inspire us as we exercise our gifts…we have been freed to serve each other and to do so with a spirit of love.

Blessings on your acts of service, dear friend, and may we each make a difference in someone’s life as we walk through this day God has given us!

As each has received a gift,

use it to serve on another,

as good stewards of God’s varied grace.

1 Peter 4:10

The first time I volunteered for something, it was just a little thing, but I felt so happy to help. Life was handing out some tough life lessons to me at that time and our family needed help from our church, yet God led us to give back through service. At first it was just in little ways:  help set up for a church picnic and handing out bulletins at church on Sunday morning. From there we moved on to bigger committments.
As I served, a funny thing started to happen, I wasn’t so wrapped up in our life tragedies all day and all night. I was able to smile and laugh. I was given peace and was able to deal with what I was going through a little bit easier. I realized no matter how bad I thought my circumstances were, there were others that had to deal with a lot more. It didn’t make everything go away, but by serving others, I was able to step out of my problems and worries and be the hands and feet of Jesus. I was also able to recognize and appreciate Gods’ blessings. The more I served, the more I wanted to serve.

Father God, please help us today to be a good steward of the grace You have given us. Please lead us as we use our gifts in service to others.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Because He has

My nephew is getting married tonight to a sweet young lady.  I am part of a very large (and a little crazy) extended family and over all, there is an air of excitement as we are looking forward to time together celebrating. While we are genuinely happy to be together as a family, there are also other more negative undertones present because we are a family with lots of “history” behind us.  Sibling rivalries will try to resurface.  The differences in how we live out our faith will potentially collide at times.  Reminiscing will possibly resurface memories of pain and guilt.  And not all of us are “doing great” at the moment, with various personal issues that we are currently facing.

I don’t think we are alone in that; most extended family gatherings and reunions this summer will have similar challenges.  How can navigate through the fun/the silly/the intense/the awkward moments and do so with grace?

Grace has been a theme of this blog for weeks and I can’t help but be grateful with this family gathering I am going to be part of.  I need grace!  I was reminded of this verse in Proverbs 3:34 this morning and I am going to cling to it personally:  “He mocks proud mockers but gives grace to the humble.”  I can’t control the conversations around me.  I can’t control all the circumstances I find myself in or that my family are in.  I can control my attitude and choose humility!

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.

We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only,

who came from the Father,

full of grace and truth.

John 1:14

Glorious!  That is the word used in Scripture to describe Jesus, our picture of grace and truth, existing in perfection and fullness.  Glorious in His grace and truth!

Dear God,

You are our example and our inspiration!

Please help us to be full of grace and truth as we walk through our day!

In the Name of Jesus, Amen!
